Recorded in the Domesday Book Chipping Ongar has a long history as an important
centre being as both the hundredal moot and the hundredal market were held
here and also has the oldest recorded park in England with Ongar Great Park
mentioned in an Anglo Saxon Will of 1015, although Ongar's history
goes back much further as the mid-12th century church was constructed some
Roman bricks were included, the main Roman road from London to Colchester
being close by. Chipping comes from the Saxon words cheape"
or cheppyng" meaning the field where the market and
fairs are held".In 1162 Richard de Lucy, Chief Justice of England
built a great castle with a fine Motte and Bailey", the castle
was demolished in the 16th Century with only the mound remaining. 
The town became a significant staging-point during
the early post-medieval period with the town accommodation in 1686 for
71 people and 104 horses.

Today Chipping Ongar still retains charm and character
and a picturesque High Street with a Weekly Market as well as excellent
facilities including Sainsburys and Tescos, close by Fyfield, Moreton
and High Ongar also offer village schools and Greensted has the world
famous St Andrews Church.

The town also boasts two junior schools, library
and an excellent Leisure/Fitness Centre,
